Since the last 25 years, the Department of Fine Arts has been providing opportunities to students to acquire skills, knowledge and competence in Fine Arts through innovative and creative use of The Fine Arts Complexvisual language. A 2-year certificate programme and a 4-year Diploma programme have been offered on a part time basis. A 4-year full time B.A. Honours programme in Fine Arts was introduced in 1997 with the collaboration of the University of Mauritius. In 1999, a 3-year part time B.A Honours with Education was introduced for students who had completed their Diploma.The areas of specialisation are: Painting and Print-making, Sculpture and Crafts.The Department fosters interaction between Mauritian artists and students and artists of the Indian Ocean region as it believed that exchange programmes help in broadening outlook and vision.
Salon de Mai
The annual Salon de Mai brings professional artists of the country under one roof , thus offering a variety of techniques and a myriad of forms and colours.
Art Fair
The aim of the Art Fair is to popularise art among the public and to enable lovers of art to gather, evaluate and admire what hands can achieve while the mind is in the process of creation.
The first Art Fair was organised in August 2000.
The Department of Fine Arts wants to broaden its horizon by hosting exhibitions of the works of established artists from both well-known universities and private organisations at the Mahatma Gandhi Institute Gallery.
The Department of Fine Arts aims at becoming the National School of Fine Arts.
