| Music, dance & Fine Arts @ Mahatma Gandhi Institute (Moka) |
The activities of the School of Music and Dance created as a joint venture of the Governments of India and Mauritius in 1964 and incorporated with the Mahatma Gandhi Institute in 1971, as well as those of the Department of Fine Arts, the Department of Extra Mural Studies (1982) and the Department of Bhojpuri, Folklore & Oral Traditions (1983), have had a definite impact on the cultural life of the country at large.
The Department of Fine Arts through workshops and non-award courses has made the Fine Arts accessible to the youth of Mauritius and Rodrigues.
The Salon de Mai, held annually and regrouping the works of Mauritian artists, is now a landmark in the national calendar of artistic activities. The four departments have also had an impact regionally through exchange programmes with neighbouring countries. |

| SCHOOL OF FINE ARTS (SFA) |
The School of Fine Arts is a unique learning experience within the larger tertiary education field in Mauritius. Since its inception, it strives to offer a friendly and relaxed atmosphere where the student can develop his or her creative potential. Lecturers and non-teaching staff all share the same informal relationship to help foster creativity and thinking.
More than the regular 4 to 5 hours, students are encouraged to be self-motivated and work on their own projects at their own rhythm. The many activities, workings and interactions with visiting lecturers and foreign artists force the students to think outside of their restricted initial frames of reference and respond to contemporary thinking in the field of art. |
