| Fashion and Design Institute to be launched in September 2009 |
With a view to paving the way for the modernization of the capital into a fashionable business and commercial hub, the Fashion and Design Institute (FDI) is currently working on a project for the uplifting of Sir William Newton Street, Port Louis by integrating a strong design dimension. The FDI which is expected to be launched in September 2009 is part of government’s initiatives to restore confidence in the textile and clothing sector. Its objective is to assist enterprises to migrate towards the higher end of the market with a view to successfully confront competition.
In this endeavour, the Institute will provide academic courses in the field of design, fashion, graphics and multimedia, and professional development programmes to enable industries to adapt to new technologies and keep pace with emerging trends. On this score, the FDI will enter into an agreement with the University of Technology, Mauritius for the award of certificates, diplomas and degrees by the university. It will conduct the following degree courses: BA (Hons) International Fashion Design; BA (Hons) Interior Design; Top-up degree in Graphic Design and Digital Media; and Top-up degree in Fashion and Textiles.
The Institute will also offer short term industry-driven programmes to cater for the needs of the textile sector relating to: Branding for Better Business Results; Industrial Pattern Making and an Introduction to Computer Aided Design/Computer Aided Manufacture; Fashion Merchandising; and Product Development. |
